Treatment of Dysphagia......!

  • Difficulty swallowing (Dysphagia) means it takes more time and effort to move food or liquid from your mouth to your stomach. 
  • Dysphagia may also be associated with pain.
  • In some cases, Swallowing may be impossible.

Type 1:- Dysphagia due to Throat Pain

  • This is the commonest type of Dysphagia in general practice, occurring due to Acute Tonsillitis, Pharyngitis, Laryngitis.

General Advice:-

  • Soft and liquid diet
  • No Chillies
  • No oily
  • No Irritant food
  • Gargle with warm saltwater
  • Avoid exertion
  • Adequate rest

Medical Treatment:-

  • Steam Inhalation 2-3 time/Day
  • Tab. Azithral 500mg OD For 3 days
  • Tab. Combiflam TDS for 3 days
  • If Cough is present, Take Sovental Expectorant

Type 2:- Painful Dysphagia with Retrosternal Burning and Pain

 General Advice:-

  • Do not lie down, immediately after food.
  • Bland and soft diet, more of milk.
  • Avoid hot drinks and spicy food.
  • Take a small, non-bulky meal.
  • Head high position at night.
  • Obese patients reduce their weight.
  • Avoid wearing a tight belt, clothes.

Medical Treatment:-

  • Inj. Neurobion 2cc IM for 5 to 10 days
  • Tab. Ranitidine 150mg BD
  • Mucaine gel 2 tsp every 2-4 hourly
If Pain and Dysphagia do not subside within 1 week, Refer for Oesophagoscopy and Barium swallow.

Type 3:- Obstructive Dysphagia 

                                 If there is a definite and progressive obstruction to the passage of solid foods.
 e.g Any solid food taken regurgitates or goes in only on drinking plenty of water.
If the patient refuses to drink even water, then suspect HYDROPHOBIA and RABIES.
  • Then do not waste time giving medicines.



Go to Hospital in serious Condition !!!
